Award-winning multimedia journalist, Latif Iddrisu, has gone into hiding, following a death threat on his life, even as police in the Greater Accra Region continue investigations into an earlier assault against him.
A close source revealed to The Ghanaian Times that the threat came from an unidentified individual believed to be one of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters who assaulted Latif at the EOCO headquarters in May. The assailants had gathered in support of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Antwi Boasiako, who was being questioned by authorities at the time.
Latif, who had filed a police complaint after the assault, received a threatening text message ordering him to withdraw from the case.
The message read: “Hey Latif, withdraw the matter from the police or we will cut you and your kids. Don’t act tough, man.”
Despite repeated appeals for police protection, sources say Latif has received no concrete support from the authorities.
During the EOCO incident, NPP supporters reportedly threatened him, saying: “We know where you are coming from and what we can do.”
Another added: “Today is your last day.”
NPP Deputy National Organiser, Lloyd Nii Kwei, who allegedly interrupted Latif’s live broadcast that day, later described the journalist as a “dangerous character” and vowed to blacklist him from NPP events.
When Latif reported the assault, Kwei reportedly tried to discredit him, asking: “Who assaulted you?”
The threats and lack of security response have raised concerns among press freedom advocates, who say journalists in Ghana are increasingly under attack for doing their jobs.
